Well, heres an expansion on that. The alternate Defiant used a different polarity dispersion for their sheild rotation when they were attacked by the Borg. So when they go through the wormhole, the plasma leak mixes with the Wormholes verteron field and creates an interdemensional jump between the universes.

Dude, this is such a cool idea, you've gotta write it and submit it to the Guild so the whole details can be developed. Its a story with definate potential. (That, and we desperatly need a DS9 script!)
