I think we will see more Defiant class starships on DS9 next year, just as we saw the Malinche, a Sovereign class vessel, on For the Uniform. Ron Moore wants to dump the Excelsiors because they are so old, and a few Defiants would more than replace them. The original draft of FC had more Defiant class starships also.

The problem is, as seen with Admiral Leyton as well as Cartwright and Co. from The Undiscovered Country, Starfleet is in a position to dominate, and if too powerful could cause trouble. Since Starfleet is Earth's project in many regards, some of the non-Terran peoples might be worried Starfleet will become an arm of terror like the Imperial fleet did under Emperor Palpatine. They're wrong, so screw 'em, I say.
