Shields and Forcefields

Yet another thing that bothers me. The Enterprise is said to have no windows, but forcefields. Isn't it better to use windows? I mean- a solid has its own inherent strength, but in case of a power-failure (and Enterprises power has been drained o so many times) almost the whole ship would become vacuum.

Is this because they use a kind of shield that doesn't need an external energy-source (like a superconducting coil generating a magnetic field without the need of being charged)

Or is this because spaceships encounter so much litter in space that there would be no point in sustaining the ship without at least some kind of shielding?

The latter would also explain why most starships look so slick, no scratch whatsoever on their surface.
