Sol's closest neighbor is Alpha Centauri is only 4.3 light-years away. And the average distance between stars of all types differs, depending on the distance from the galatic center: The closer to the center, the closer (theory suggests about 0.25 light-years apart), and spreading further out towards the rim (I have heard the figure of 87 light-years, but not sure). Now, if you are concerned with the average distance between system containing class-M planets: it is generally accepted that class-M planets tend to be 'clustered' (if you will) in a general area, with other areas being fairly void of such. However, keep in mind that there will always be exceptions, with the class-M's showing up in unexpected areas, and vice versa.
