Geordi La Forge is named after a Star Trek fan with muscular dystrophy who passed away in 1975 (George La Forge).

The character La Forge was born blind, given sight by Riker ("Hide and Q") which he decided he didn't want, and decided against a sight operation by Dr. Pulaski in "Loud As A Whisper." La Forge received ocular implants ("Star Trek: First Contact"), instead of the old visor around 2371, according to Star Trek Chronology.

Both his parents are in Starfleet ("Imaginary Friend"); his father is an exobiologist and his mother, Silva La Forge, was the captain of starship Hera, who was killed due to the destruction of the ship Hera on stardate 47215 (in year 2370) ("Interface").

He was promoted between seasons one and two when he was made Chief Engineer (for the first season, they were going through chief engineers left and right).

He died once with Ensign Ro in "The Next Phase" on stardate 45892 (in year 2368). They were phased to an invisible state due to Romulan cloaking device. Later, both were rescued successfully.

He resided in deck 2, room 2471 on Enterprise-D. He is currently assigned to Enterprise-E. He and Riker helped Zefram Cochrane to flight Phoenix, the first warp-powered ship, on April 4, 2063. However, this is not recorded in history, so that normal flow of timeline could not be altered. ("Star Trek: First Contact")
