Nog is Quark's teenage nephew, son of Rom.

Nog's best friend is (and is a constant bad influence on) Jake Sisko. Together they get into lots of trouble.

Rom attended the Starfleet Academy and is currently a cadet. He is probably the first Ferengi Starfleet cadet.

There are supposed to be lots of running jokes on these characters, due to the Ferengi nature.
