In my opinion Viacom and Paramount have not corrupted Gene Roddenberry's dream. Instead they have allowed it to flourish, certainly under capitalist banners, but then Roddenberry was not Commie.
Anyone who know the history of Trek production realizes that had it not been for Paramounts decision to take the reigns away from Roddenberry after ST:TMP, Roddenberry himself would have destroyed Star Trek. It is truley Harve Bennet and Leonard Nimoy who breathed new life into a Trek after the bloat 40 million dollar fiasco of ST:TMP. Certainly, the movie did well, but there was no way the studio was going to trust Roddenberry. Infact, for some bizarre reason, Roddenberry got it stuck in his head that Krk and Spock were responsible for Kennedy's death, and wrote a script for STII that put Spock on the Grassy Knoll with a rifle. OUCH! Talk about depressing!
However, given time, Roddenberry came back to creativity, and the idea for TNG came along. This was the perfect opportunity for Roddenberry to show his worth and push the studio into doing something his way. So they did, TNG was a success, and everybody loved Roddenbery again.
During TNG's begining Roddenberry held a tight reign over scripts and production. If something didn't suit him, he sent it back, or rewrote it. However, the pressure he exerted wasn't always good. Look at the stories that were told, and how shallow a good deal of them were. It wasn't until the end of the series, when Roddenbery had to step aside due to illnes that the depth came through. While every show needs time to grow, it can be said that Roddenberry's stiffling control slowed down that growth considerably.
Also think of the most annoying thing about TNG. The stagnant status quo. No main charecter dies, (unless they get fired or realize their charecter is going no where), no major charecter developments. Nothing that might have to be explained later. Worf Picard and Data are the only charecters that every changed.
These are the things we are left with.
Roddenberry hand picked Rick Berman to carry on, but there is a limit to how much one man can control.

That good? Pick and choose what you need. You have the Guild email if your prof needs confirmation.
