The shows are most certainly different. Personally, I prefer the characters of DS9 an Voy because they are so much richer and better written than B5's. While that rapport between Kirk, Spock, and Bones isn't there. it's made up by all characters (except Harry Kim) being much deeper.

TOS certainly did have that fun I can appreciate. But I think DS9 have fun not through the sense of adventure, but through things like episodes like "Little Green Men" and "Our Man Bashir" as well as through its overall great sense of humor.

B5 doesn't wrap up problems in 10 minutes; it drags them over a year and wraps them up in a two-parter like "The Long Night"/"Into the Fire" did.

I think DS9 and First Contact in particular do show the dark side while maintaining a level of hope. I mean, homeless people on a space station! Isn't that being a bit too cynical?

As for the inter show cameos, the only one that has worked recently for me is "Dr Bashir I Presume." Of course, B5 has Walter Koening and Majel Barrett, two of Star Trek lesser shining stars.
