: The shows are most certainly different. Personally, I prefer the characters of DS9 an Voy because they are so much richer and better written than B5's. While that rapport between Kirk, Spock, and Bones isn't there. it's made up by all characters (except Harry Kim) being much deeper.

: TOS certainly did have that fun I can appreciate. But I think DS9 have fun not through the sense of adventure, but through things like episodes like "Little Green Men" and "Our Man Bashir" as well as through its overall great sense of humor.

: B5 doesn't wrap up problems in 10 minutes; it drags them over a year and wraps them up in a two-parter like "The Long Night"/"Into the Fire" did.

: I think DS9 and First Contact in particular do show the dark side while maintaining a level of hope. I mean, homeless people on a space station! Isn't that being a bit too cynical?

: As for the inter show cameos, the only one that has worked recently for me is "Dr Bashir I Presume." Of course, B5 has Walter Koening and Majel Barrett, two of Star Trek lesser shining stars.

Of the new shows, DS9 is the more challenging & entertaining. I don't dislike it, but it doesn't draw me to watch it every week. I can't stomach VOY anymore. Now, I admit, I haven't watched any episodes this year, but thats because it got so lame the last two. I haven't found the characters to be that engaging. Plus, thw whole premise of them lost and trying to get home is such a tease. I'm waiting for them to meet Will Robinson & the Carrot Man. DS9 has been very good at times, but I feel it's the illegitimate child of the Star Trek family. I think it is because it has been gritty and darker. The franchise got very whitebread with STNG. I love the original "Mirror, Mirror" episode, but I don't like how easy it's become to get there.

As for B5, I love how it keeps storylines going for a while and is much more challenging. I admit, it is very hard to pick up in midstride. I good example of the difference between the two, was an episode of B5 that had an alien plague in it. Now normally, I could give a fat rat's ass about most of these one shot alien races on both shows. But on B5, they did a good job on attaching some feelings for the race and didn't discover a serum until it was too late. On Star Trek, they would discover the cure in Neelix's table scraps in the last 5 minutes and all would be well in the universe. Much more impact and much more gripping in B5.

By the way, I don't mind Koenig and others on B5 because they are different characters. Hey these guys have to eat and it sure won't be on their acting prowess. The whining of the original secondary crew about Shatner is better left for another conversation.
Now, I do like the ship on VOY alot and some other things about it, but I do think that Paramount is running low in the idea dept.
