He joined the marines when he was 18..and worked his way up through the ranks...became officer through battlefield commissions...serving with ground troops in Cardassian War...after war was sent to Special Ops training and worked as field agent for starfleet intelligence for a while. Wasn't cut out for peacetime service and left the corps. Served on Bajor as an "Unofficial Advisor" during Occupation. Volunteered in the Klingon Civil War on side of government..was permitted to do so because he had trained and served with Klingons in early exchange program and in joint covert operations when with starfleet intelligence.

Hemingway is an stradegy and tactics...and a admirer of old earth military history...coming from a long line of military family. He is a soldier and warrior and was out of place in starfleet during peacetime...has unpopular views because he believes the federation has become complacent when it comes to military readiness. Inspite his leanings to the right and authoritativness..he has a deep commitment to democracy and civilian government...and as often as his views conflict with starfleet and federation popular views....he has an intense loyalty and passion for it and it's survival from the current war.
it was due to heavy losses in the war..he nad other's like him....veteran combat soldiers are being called forth to help lead and train most of the younger peacetime starfleet officers and enlisted personel.

His motto is "To lead them well and train them well is to bring them home alive."
