Yeah, a lot of people have been saying that was unrealistic. And come to think of it, it kind of does. But look at it this way, do you remember the episode where Paris and Neelix got caught on that planet and ended up taking care of that baby? In the begining of the episode, Paris was teaching Kes how to fly a shuttle, and they entered a combat scenario. Anyone remember what kind? It was a scenario involving a possible Dominion incursion on Federation space. They were attacked by Jem'Hadar warships. So a Dominion incursion was probably not big on their minds, but it was always a possibility.

Unfortunately, I don't think Michael got a chance to post the revised version before you read it, so I can see how it didn't make a lot of sense in the end. The new one explains a lot more, but is not perfect. Basically I wanted to end it with the hope that the Federation now knows they are alive, and that they will do everything they can to bring them home.

The thing about the star system was intended to leave you wondering. But, if you want my thoughts on it, it is a lead in to a possible future episode where the Trill Scientists open up a wormhole to there, but they still cannot stabalize it. And then there would be like alien attacks and stuff. A really cool episode. Someone else was saying that maybe it could lead to a changeling infiltrator being on the ship. Of course, they wouldn't know what that was because they were lost before the Federation found out about them.
